Elected Pope on October 28, 1958, at age 76, Pope John XXIII surprised those who expected him to be a caretaker or placeholder figure by calling the historic Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the first session opening on October 11, 1962. His Feast Day, October 11, is a fitting tribute. His papacy lasted four years and seven months; he died from stomach cancer in June of 1963. His body is incorrupt. John XXIII emphasized the Church’s pastoral and evangelizing role and dropped the traditional rule of 70 cardinals, increasing the size to 85. John XXIII used the opportunity to name the first cardinals from Africa, Japan, and the Philippines. As Pope, he promoted ecumenical movements in cooperation with other Christian faiths. On July 5, 2013, Pope Francis – bypassing the traditionally required second miracle – declared John XXIII a saint based on his virtuous life and the tremendous good that had come from his inauguration of the Second Vatican Council. He was canonized along with Pope John Paul II on April 27, 2014, on Divine Mercy Sunday. Pray to John XXIII: he did not mourn the darkness nor live in fear but stepped into the light that is Christ.

Saint Pope John XXIII, pray for us!
